The theory goes with IOT is that everything will be connected right. your fridge will talk to your car, which will ping the location of the supermarket and when your drive past your car will remind you that the fridge needs a restock. As you enter the store, your phone will link into the system and automatically trigger loyalty programs and also tell your wife that your at the store so she can log into the fridge and check the inventory and sms you to also pick up some Koolaid. etc etc, etc.
the issue here is data... thats a boat loads of data in very small packets running constantly. the race is ultimately the widest, fastest and cheapest pipe for the data will win. Whether thats fibre, satelites, nano-sats, micro-wave, laser or some crazy destributed network where everything on the IOT becomes the IOT network by acting as server, router, switch, cache, and data storage all in one fridge, but when you have 1 million fridges all linked it becomes possible.... you get it.
Thats the cross over... IOT is happening, the question is what method for linkages will be first past the post.
