erinys, it's not as far-fetched as you may think. These slides into fear-gripped societies can happen very precipitously. Look at what's happening in the market now. The warnings were there but the preventatives were not. Same with national economies. Once the finances are drained then the people can become quite feral. History (and the present) is full of such examples.
