Betterman; in my early years our home in rural and remote Victoria wasn't connected to the electricity grid.
Back then we purchased blocks of ice to place in our cold box, used Tilley lamps for lighting and played card games and sang songs for evening entertainment [ie. NO television]. We had an EverHot slow combustion stove that also heated our water and warmed our kitchen - it doubled as our main living room.
We had our own cows and bought eggs from a neighbour, growing our vegies and fruit.
Due to the bloody-mindedness of the Coalition Australia has been caught with its power pants down around its ankles. Until renewable energy infrastructure comes up to speed Australians should be asked to moderate their power use when it's safe to do so - including businesses and large corporations!
As for holding on to filthy old coal-fired power stations or building replacements for them - that's akin to blokes urinating into the wind.
