I don't believe much of this tale. The gold in the real Wits basin is very fine and barely visible with the naked eye in the best cases (carbon leader)- elsewhere invisible. There are no records of people pulling out nuggets that I know of. In general the gold fills fractures that seem to be associated with with some dynamic or cataclastic shock metamorphic event as as well as carbon and uranium. The paragenesis in Wits reefs is very clear: dynamic metamorphism, carbon infiltration plus polymerisation on uraninite and gold deposition in that order. Complete sulphidation of oxide minerals (increase in molar volume) and alteration of uraninite to brannerite and uraniferous leucoxene is ubiquitous. The carbon being some biological remnant does not stack up in the face of the evidence.
BTW it is not pronounced wits as in "when wits meet sparks fly" but vits.
