HONG KONG (Thomson Financial) - Hong Kong shares closed sharply higher Wednesday, extending gains for a third straight day as investors snapped up blue-chip companies like CITIC Pacific Ltd on strong first-half earnings. Chinese conglomerate CITIC Pacific, engaged in steel manufacturing and property development, gained 1.15 dollars or 3.2 percent to 36.85, after reporting earlier today that its first-half net profit rose 44 percent to 4.97 billion dollars.
