Yes Malaysia has made huge technological and economic progress in the last two decades.
However, it's NOT just because of Mahathir's shrewdness that the country has moved ahead by leaps and bounds.
I would say, it has more to do with the fact that 38% of the population is ethnic Chinese who have provided all the know-how required by the IT technology that has thrived in Malaysia.
The Malays, by nature, and perhaps because of their religion, Islam, are a lazy bunch of people (no insult intended) who expect everything to be provided to them by the government.

PS. Have you lived in Malaysia? What is your connection with that country FG???
