I disagree with most of the thust of your argument West Coast.
The Labour Party proposed an NBN that would have cost multiples of what the current model is costing. And in addition to that, it did not budget for it properly, and attempted to hide the costs from joe average and co.
It would have cost multiples of the current model because it required replacement of copper wire into every premise in Australia. It doesn't take all that much to understand that the last metres of underground connection to 8 million individual premises is vastly more costly than simply connecting to the existing copper (or anything else that happens to be there - I myself connected via the existing underground cable that Telstra had in place) that is already in place.

Nothing to do with LNP, just simple business logic.

You can either argue that the deployment model is wrong, OR that the budget is wrong - but you cannot argue both of these at the one time.

The NBN is a commendable nation building effort when viewed from the perspective of country Australia, which was stuck with line speeds out of the 1950's, but it creates another inefficient government monopoly and is a massive socialization on the more populated parts of Australia, who suffer less choice in order to pay for rolling out the infrastructure to our country cousins.
