Buying stocks based on what you read in a newspaper, just like following a tipster, does not always work out. Yes it's a shame as I was building my position (10,000 shares) that the price re-traced just under 20%... very quickly, like about a week. No I don't use stop losses but if I did I'm sure they would be triggered. At the time I wasn't that happy with the way the stock prices seemed to rise (and then mysteriously fall) . Plenty of other good buys at the time that we still hold. XRO which has put $7 a share on in the same time.
Often the shares you tip out can go on to perform very well. It's not possible to own everything. I do tend to look at capital losses and capital gains. If a stock is trailing the rest, it's often said the "first loss is the best loss". Or perhaps you can tread water by reading HC posts. In ideal world I prefer to let my profits run. But on a newly owned stock a drop of just under 20% in a week did not inspire confidence in this case.
