Technically the atomic bombs had no military effect. More died in the fire bombing of Tokyo, and another city was being burned every week just as had been done to Germany's civilans. The atomic explosions were a footnote in the Japanese war ministry. The surrender was not till a week later after the Kwantung army collapsed under the weight of Soviet tanks.
