The future will be fuel cell / EV hybrids in much the same way as you currently have petrol / electric hybrids. You will still need to store the excess energy. What I don't understand is the rush to electrify cars without addressing the energy source issue. Most electricity generation is still combustion based with the associated emissions issues.
Ideally you want a system where you can generate hydrogen cheaply and cleanly (HZR), and then store hydrogen cheaply. Something tells me that we are not too far off this development.
Mercedes announced last month what will be the first fuel cell / EV hybrid to market.
