A professor at the [Institute] Weizmann and an entrepreneur have patented a device that extracts carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turns it into fuel. They say it has the potential to save life on our planet.

Bannit says it's a no-brainer that a steel mill uses its technology.

According to Bannit, a "standard" steel mill that produces 5 million tonnes of steel a year discards 500 MW of heat and emits around 9 million tonnes of CO2 (or almost double the amount of CO2 compared to steel) .

"If all the heat is made available to our system and if we produce methanol (which means that part of the energy is used to dissociate the water) then we will process 5% of the CO2 emissions . However, if the system was used to decouple only CO2 , then it would be 15%. These numbers are very large. Steelmakers who hear much more modest figures like 2% are extremely happy. The goal for Korean steelmakers is to reduce their emissions by 6% by 2020."

Bannit says that Professor Jacob Karni's patented technology allows NCF to convert CO2 to fuel more efficiently and at a lower cost than others.

In 2014, New CO2 Fuels won the prestigious World Technology Prize, presented at the UN, in the category of corporate energy. The company has received several alternative fuel Administration grants from the Israeli government . So far, they have two prototypes of work and will be launched in a year and a half in two industrial plants in Europe and Israel.

"At this point we are targeting steel factories," says Bannit, "but in the future we imagine our units of work in the desert, with only the sun as a source of energy and the CO2 of the normal atmosphere. We can generate fuel. It's a closed loop. "
