After wind, solar (thermal) and hydro electric there isn't much viable alternative energy sources. Solar photovoltaic doesn't add up, it takes more energy to make the solar cells than you get beck over their working life. Biofuels are a bigger disaster then oil, generating more CO2 and reducing available food. Oh well I suppose that helps fix the population. As for nuclear, except for making big bangs, it's never been economic without government subsidy.
