Benson, you where a bit lucky with your connection.
When people switch from ADSL to NBN it involves the old wholesaler (Telstra), new wholesaler (NBNco), and the retailer. If your a Telstra retail customer they can schedule it to be convenient for themselves as there are only two parties.
Most non Telstra customers who switch to NBN have to go without Internet for over a week, its explained by technician appointments etc, and thats what gives people a bad first impression of NBN
Not sure if Telstra deliberately prioritises their own retail customers over others, but i suspect they do.
Not sure what speed plan your onw, but do yourself a favour and lookup your address on the following map and it will show an estimate of your maximum speed based on distance from node. Some people are wasting money going for fast plans.
