"No good doing a perish with 10 kg nuggets in the saddle bags"

Has happened, JJ, but not with 10kg. Just before 1900 hardy prospectors used to go out east from Carnarvon, following the rains, towards central Australia. They had to watch the weather carefully, for if the pools dried up behind them, they could not make it back and die. Some did.
An out bound party, way out east, found the remains of a horse, saddle, and skeletal remains clutching the remains of a bag containing gold bearing rocks.
It is believed by some that that put the idea of a lost reef into Lasseter's head.
Unfortunately the gold in the bag was in Archean greenstone, and most likely came from the Kalgoorlie goldfield, they said.
Yes, as a romantic young fellow, I researched the legend of Lasseter's Reef....... till after a year of requesting through the library system, I got hold of a book called "Dream Millions" by Fred Blakely. Blakely was Lasseter's expedition leader about 1930 to try and re-find his lost reef. Blakely decided Lasseter was a fraudster.
Great reading if you can get the book.... Amazon advertises it.
Also more reading on Lasseter here.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasseter's_Reef for anyone interested.
Forgive sort of off-topic, but I thought some might be interested.
