I sent the following letter to the journo responsible for an AFR article yesterday titled 'Aussie Ingenuity'.
In part, the Chief Ex Of the CSIRO, Larry Marshall speaking at the National Press club, stated that just 5.5% of Australian businesses invested in their own 'novel products'. Worth a read and responses from interested parties, like those of us here I reckon.

I read with interest your article concerning 'Aussie ingenuity' in the AFR on 9th Nov.
An Australian company 'Eden Innovations' (listed on the ASX under the code EDE) in conjunction with Australian University based Research and Development has joined the ranks of the 5.5% Australian businesses invested in their own novel products.

The company produces a unique product based upon the manufacture of multi-walled-carbon-nanotubes, with hydrogen as the only by-product. EDE was given financial assistance to set up production facilities in the US, where it is making significant inroads with a concrete additive across a range of applications. The success of that product (called EdenCrete) is based upon US test and field trial results, to the extent that it is specified for use in certain circumstances and gaining acceptance in a growing number of US states and also being used/trialled by private company's. In essence the concrete additive is green in manufacture and in the fact that it reduces the quanties involved as well as extending the life of the concrete projects. In some cases steel reinforcing can be reduced, if not removed all together, whilst maintaining engineering specification.

I recommend that EDE fits with the crux of what Larry Marshall was espousing and with the intent of what Bill Ferris is looking to promote. EDE moved to the USA, but it is an Aussie company and there is definitely a place here for the use of and possible manufacturing of their unique products, should the opportunity arise.

Anyway, I just thought that I would draw your attention to an Aussie R&D success story in a C21st carbon nanotube based industry.
