    The lithium case: what's next?
The KSČM was the first to report the lack of legal norms in connection with mining and, above all, the elaboration of this strategic element a year ago, the government did not address this issue in the first place.  In the end, it was, according to the party's analysis of the CSSD, one of the reasons for the disastrous electoral fall of the Social Democracy.  While Andrej Babiš (and especially the marketing and PR departments of the ANO movement) proved the lithium cases in the pre-election struggle masterfully, the Social Democrats hardly paid for it.
But the question remains what will happen next.  Although, at its extraordinary meeting on 16 October 2017, the Chamber of Deputies pledged its government to cancel the disputed Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Minister of Industry and Trade Jiří Havlíček (CSSD) with the Australian company European Metals Holdings, nothing is happening.  Bohuslav Sobotka's government is incapable of self-reflection, and in the trench position he is quietly waiting for further action.
Interest in the extraction of lithium and other metals continues.  Companies that have invested a lot of money in the survey are not interested in our postpranches.  At present an Environmental Impact Assessment study (EIA) has been approved for the Horní Slavkov waste pond.  If the transport of the ore obtained by rail is solved, nothing will prevent it from starting to benefit from the site.  But do we know where the rock ends?  Where will it be processed and what will be the production of batteries and other products in the Czech Republic?  Will we ever benefit from the added value of this key raw material?  Unfortunately, it seems that the warning words of Communist deputies will be fulfilled, and the excavated rock will populate beyond our borders.
But the peripetion around our mineral wealth is definitely not over.  Lithium is not the only element of interest.  Another probable issue is exploration work to find the cobalt site.  Nowadays they are already running in Kraslice.  According to geologist Ota Janouch, who is moving in this area, cobalt is even higher than lithium.  And the time that comes is going to be lithium, and that's along with the cobalt and graphite components needed to make the batteries.
The protection of our natural wealth remains the priority of the KSCM.  That is why the solution to this issue is also one of the main conditions for the tolerance of the minority government of Andrej Babiš.  Time is running and the question remains that the government and the newly elected Chamber of Deputies are preserved.
Jaroslav BORKA, representative of the Karlovy Vary Region (KSČM)
