Greens’ Lee Rhiannon slammed over ‘asset buyback’ proposal

Greens senator Lee Rhiannon has admitted she did not cost her new policy initiative to renationalise trains, buses, prisons and electricity assets in NSW.
The left-wing senator also opposes new private schools and hospitals. She said higher taxes on the rich and businesses would pay for her policy agenda, which will be released in Sydney on Monday.

The Weekend Australian privatisation had failed and was pursued only because Labor and Liberal politicians wanted to keep business happy so they could secure high-paying jobs in the private sector when they left politics.
“When you consider how quickly the revolving door spins from people leaving parliament to getting a job in the area where they’ve developed great expertise ... I think it is a type of corruption,” Senator Rhiannon said.
Greens leader Richard Di Natale, who suspended Senator Rhiannon from the party room in June, would not comment on her policy intiative.
“Senator Rhiannon is in the midst of a preselection in NSW and as such it would be inappropriate to comment on her campaign materials,” a spokesman for Senator Di Natale said.
Also in her policy booklet, Senator Rhiannon proposes a twentyfold increase in the construction of social housing in NSW to 165,000 homes a year.
“I haven’t done the costings on that but this is a conversation that is happening around the world, that it has been a failure,” she said. “Clearly there is a cost there but I would argue in the long run that it is cost-effective because people are getting the services that they need.”
Liberal MP Jason Falinski, a Sydney MP who advised the Baird government on its electricity privatisation, said the Greens were living in a “parallel universe”.
