What's the issue. should the (white) government keep offenders on the street? How about their parent? Are they not responsible for their kids?
Some cultural sensitivity needs too be applied to aboriginals, especially in places that are mostly aboriginal.
Aboriginal offenders that are not violent should IMO not be incarcerated.
They are better rehabilitated by a different form of detention eg sent to an outdoor camp where they can reconnect with the land.
They can work to restore their country---control feral animals, weeds and get off the grog or drugs.
In what way is it a disaster? Don't you understand we don't want many more thousands of boatloads????
Keeping refugees on offshore an offshore detention facility is a disaster because private contractors make a huge fortune . There were billions that could have been used to beef up our security and control hot spots at home.
We have made ourselves a laughing stock in the UN and caused mental damage to the refugees.
I would process the refugees on the mainland and while waiting for their verdict--give then work so that if they are sent back to their homeland, we do not need to give them taxpayers money.
We can build secure detention camps as small cities so that the refugees who are successful will have already begun the process of integration.
Its called common sense and showing some respect and empathy for other humans.
However I would have a tough criteria for the refugees to pass before being accepted.
