Hey TBull, without going too far away from buddy. I'd recommend sticking to the original as Bitcoin is the brand and has a solid cryptographic algorithm backing it.

If you want a punt go for litecoin as its the closest close to the original and is used to test new features before they are implemented to the original blockchain that btc runs on.

It's also the only "coin" that can be traded with Bitcoin in a single transaction. This feature is called an atomic swap.

The idea is that Bitcoin will become the ultimate store of value like a digital gold. Litecoin is seen by the millennials as "silver" to Bitcoins "gold" and is designed to compliment Bitcoin by providing instant peer to peer transactions without a third party.

I know this may sound very stupid to many but once you experience it for yourself you'll understand.
