I don't think they are necessarily homophobic.
There are people that view marriage in a traditional way.
Maybe they don't religiously follow their doctrine in all matters these days but many would consider that sex is for procreation and should only occur within a sanctified male female partnership.
In Australia those true believers have slowly become a minority as Western social values change.
