i have a friend who now runs a queensland power company based on using dams at an old mine site to generate hydro power (dams are converted waste pits)
they flow water from 'head' (highest elevation dam) to lower dam to drive turbine and generate power during peak price periods - then overnight buy power back at 5c on the dollar off peak - use that power to pump the water back up to the head dam - rinse and repeat next day
very clever and very green solution to what would otherwise be close to unusable land
reason he came up with the idea is because of the massivand apparently widening gap between peak and offpeak demand/price
his solution was basically creating a large battery via an economic transmission system to 'store' offpeak power for peak periods

This is also a great way to utilize surplus solar. I have no idea why Australia doesn't do this kind of thing on a larger scale considering how sunny the country is. But here we are, extending coal plant lifetimes.
