Hi dub,
I'd tentatively dispute your purchasing power figures, at least with regard to big ticket items. In 1970 I worked in the loans dept of a bank. You could buy a pretty fair house for $12-15,000 from memory (Adelaide). Those same houses sell for $350-400k now. Similarly, I bought a 6cyl Monaro about 1969 for $2700ish (again from memory). I supppose the equivalent is $40k+ now.
Of course electronics and white goods are relatively cheaper now than then. My first 'real' computer cost about a fifth of the price of a family car only 10-12 years ago. Now look at them.
Either way I'd still have liked to have invested $10k in BH 40 years ago.
