cortis, I think you are missing the big picture even though you covered many of its aspects.
Firstly you fear that the surety of the economic prosperity that we have become accustomed to is in danger, then secondly you acknowledge that the younger generation have not yet cut their teeth on surviving in the real world.
I personally think that a period of doing it tough is of long term benefit both for an individual and a nation.
There is a Chinese adage about wealth not lasting past 3 generations which closely resembles our own, of the first generation clearing the land, the second clearing the debt and the third clearing the assets.
Given this behaviour is basic human nature, I don't think anyone, or any nation can avoid it.
Rather than fearing total disaster, acknowledge that sooner or later it is inevitable and position yourself to take advantage of the many opportunities that WILL arise if or when things become turbulent.
