The simple answer to your question ghosty is that those countries are not signatures to the UN agreement on refugees as Australia is. In other words, they could not expect to obtain asylum in those countries. They did expect to get it here and we let them down. Didn't even examine their claims. Does that make you proud to be Autralian? It sure doen't make me proud.

Ask yourself this question. Would you risk crossing a dangerous ocean in an unseaworthy boat with people you knew were scoundrells if you really had any other alternative? Well, would you?

Why are these people automatically dregs? You know nothing about them yet you dehumanise them immediately. That's what the Howard govt has done. By their media blackout and subtle denigration these refugees have been stripped of their humanity until they are simply seen as pieces on a chess board to be moved around at our convenience.

Normally I wouldn't bother replying to you or domain as I know it's a waste of time,but just maybe this time you'll try to think for yourself instead of swallowing the govenment propaganda...
