Dr Karl is quite right regards our technical ability to replace coal fired electric power generation. Be it geothermal or solar.
It appears that AUSRA & others are gaining traction in the USA etc.
But what frightens me is how frightened everyone is, or how easily scared people are, at the suggestion we might have to pay (lets take a stab at it) twice as much as we now pay for electricity.
Why are we so scared of becoming a little bit poorer next year? Apart from those who are in fact despirately poor now that is.
The extra we pay for electricity can be made up by finding cheaper ways of selling goods. If David Jones etc didn't have to (or could find a way of not) mark-up stuff 100% or (more) or whatever the market is prepared to pay, then we could SAVE hugely - over night.
Alternatively, we could save billions by gradually reducing "gambling". But it isn't the amount of money gambled but the cost of providing the facilities. Like the huge electricty guzzling cassinos. Plus the waste of time. If Australians spent 15% of the wasted time gambling on producing stuff, then maybe David Jones & Coles etc could keep their high mark-ups.
Or, if we stpped spending money on useless stuff, liek overseas holidays, then we'd have heaps left over for clean electric bills.
And as for the Howard argument that if we signed Kioto we'd be exporting jobs to China, well what the hell does the rising A$ do? Exactly that.
And a rising Chinese currency (whatever its called...sorry for being a little ignorant...I know it is not call a Yen...so it is the other one) will mean we have to pay MORE for our plasma screens....oh no, its the end of the world, as we have become accustomed.
