Life experience. Some red flags repeat themselves:
Big money is just around the corner.
Small details that don't add up.
Too much boasting.

If I see a red flag I start doing research on the internet. Sometimes for hours.

The most important thing is to ignore the understandable desire for it to be true and be emotionless about what you find.

I have been fooled on first impressions, but have always kept my eyes open for red flags.

I have been ridiculed here about my concerns on the VC deal and if this time I have been wrong I will readily admit it. I do not have a crystal ball, but I have not changed my opinion on it.
