That is true, of course and a good point. But the battery tech is also now being used extensively as a buffer to smooth out and manage renewable energy generation. The macro example is the Tesla installation in SA, but the big boom is in home battery installations - now starting to rocket the way solar panels did a few years ago, and set to grow faster as unit prices drop and pay back stats improve. This will speed the expansion of renewables as a generation source, including home solar, and increase the demand for battery materials.
Of course at some point the increase in cost of those materials may impact on the (currently falling) price of home battery installations. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.
Meanwhile, Cobalt is back up to $74,500 USD per tonne and looks, to me, like it is set for the next break out phase.
