Hydro has problems in drought, as Tasmania learnt, bass-link failed, they ran low on water and power, industrial users had to shut down, the had to ship in diesal generaters etc. Pumped hydro still needs water to pump, has higher evaporation in hot weather, competition for use etc. Its still good to add to the mix though.
Desalination is actually very good when power prices fluctuate, it doesnt need to to provide real-time supply as it can just store water, so it can be managed to use power when it is cheap. More renewables should make desal more viable.
Water was so terrible in Ballarat at the time i felt bad giving to my dog to drink... A competent government has to learn from the past and minimise future risks, thats what desal is about, managing risk.
