Western culture with it's strong concept of ownership only really advanced technologically a lot over the past two centuries, with most of that over recent decades. Our world is today very different to the world I grew up in. So I would not say that private ownership leads to greater development, and how much development do we want anyway. I certainly don't want to see Australia over run with people and all that brings with it.
