I read many posts about the supposed market maninpulation before and after market close. To clarify, both before the 10am EST open and after the 4pm EST close, the market electronically "matches" the spread between bid and offer prices.
Rather than trying to (poorly) explain how it works technically, refer to....

"......The minute your buy bid exceeds the lowest sell bid it then moves up the scale to the next bid and so on up the scale until the price is matched. So if there was 100 sellers bidding in 1c increments, your bid will continue to match the next level sell bid until it reaches a “LEVELING” bid being equal to yours, regardless of how many are in the queue.
This is why you see much higher pre-open bids as traders are attempting to grab the first parcel at the opening bid being pre-open!......"
