Im a big believer in equal pay for equal work. Granted there should be some room for negotiation on the employee's part but everyone has the right to earn the same money as the person next to them...

However... Go and read the annual gender quality reports released by the Australian Workplace Gender Equality Agency (yes I read the whole thing as someone challenged me on the pay gap once and I wanted to educate myself as I have never seen genuine discrimination based on gender and pay).

One of the first things the report says is that the gender pay gap does not take into consideration hours worked or whether like for like jobs are worked in the same industry... Essentially saying majority of it is down to choice (focus on family etc). Obviously thats not politically correct to be mainstream media but in our workplace the person who works the longer hours gets paid more irrelevant of gender, it just so happens that the hard truth is most of them tend to be male.

This is expanded upon by Christina Hoff Summers from the Factual Feminist (worth watching) who puts the myth to bed.
