If you are a believer then there is scope for variations upon the interpretation of what God's attributes are and how to communicate with Him. But if you doubt that God exists outside peoples' brains then what options do you have?
According to Pascal, for whom the probability of God existing was put at 50%, you should better believe in God because if it turns out that God does not exist then your loss is going to be minimal while if you bet that He does not exist and it turns out that He does then your loss is going to be colossal.
Russell just had a different opinion. If nobody can prove that God exists then most likely He does not and therefore for all practical purposes I am going to organize my life as if He does not. However, intellectually I am still going to let myself open to the possibility that He may.
