Religion is primitive philosophy based on mysticism. Science is based on evidence and reason.

The two are entirely opposite and completely incompatible from an epistemological point. Religion attempts to provide answers to existence via philosopher kings and the divine 'other', and claims truth based on belief rather than knowing. Science does the opposite and justifies its belief via evidence and therefore, knowing.

Whichever you believe is the correct answer is entirely your choice as an individual. I think a strong argument can be made in regards to religions role in the development of a lot of Western morals which have helped create the brilliant man-made societies we have today, but I do not think it is what will continue to propel us in the future.
