I agree we shouldn't change the date, but dont whitewash what occurred. An armed military force with free and indentured support staff landed in another's land and claimed it as for a foreign power as part of a beachhead for future colonial expansion. Regardless of the inhabitants resistance levels (they did fight back by the way), it was clearly an invasion.
