should not come as a surprise. the follwoing was uttered by ronald reagan (rupublican president of the united states)

"The Soviet forces are pitted against an extraordinary people who, in their determination to preserve the character of their ancient land, have organized an effective and still spreading country-wide resistance. The resistance of the Afghan freedom fighters is an example to all the world of the invincibility of the ideals we in this country hold most dear, the ideals of freedom and independence."

so it seems that reagan, if he were still alive would have no problem with the taliban fighting to preserve the character of their ancient land (and ancient religious practices)

the governments of the united states etc, employ experts in their foreign affairs departments, who analyse everything etc etc - so they know more about the situation than us mere mortas, banging away on a pc, posting on hc/

it is obviously not watso's area of expertise, and watso has no time for any religion in politics - and particulary if the relgion is backward - but the reality is, is that the powers to be probably knew that hussein kept the religious nutters under control in his country - that might not be democracy (limited religious freedom) - but what is needed - so they should have left him there, and that would have allowed the americans to put more troops in afghanistan - which at least had united nations approval. one way, or the other, the americans and her allies could have learned a bit more from the russian experience in afghanistan (and the british before that etc etc)

so 40000 nato troops in afghanistan, and 150,000 (?) americans in iraq. iraq was doing well to keep the situation under control - that would have allowed the americans with more options in afganistan .
