Bush's approval rating drops to lowest in presidency: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s approval rating has dropped four points in less than two weeks to 50 percent, the lowest level of his presidency, according to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll.

Forty-seven percent of respondents disapproved the way Bush was handling his job, according to the poll, conducted November 14-16 among 1,004 adults.

They were the lowest approval and highest disapproval ratings since Bush was sworn in as US president in January 2001, USA Today said.

A similar poll conducted November 3-5 put Bush's approval/disapproval rating at 54-43 percent.

Analysts pointed out that 50 percent approval rating was the traditional threshold for success for an incumbent president's reelection bid.

"Right now, it is anybody's ball game, but if I were betting, I would still bet on Bush. There is still a long way to go," Stephen Wayne a political scientist at Georgetown University told USA Today.

US presidential elections will be held November 2, 2004.

The biggest drop in Bush's approval rating came from women: in one month it fell from 53 to 44 percent. Among men, the rating fell from 60 to 56 percent in the same period, according to poll results.

On a different level, Bush fared better: 68 percent liked him as a person, 66 percent found him a strong and decisive leader, and 59 percent said he was honest and trustworthy.

However, only 42 percent of respondents thought Bush was in touch with the problems of ordinary Americans, 49 percent believed he "cared about the needs of people like you," and only 48 percent believed he could get the US economy moving.

The poll's margin of error was plus or minus three percentage points.
