I think the date will probably be changed...eventually. The legal basis for the 1788 landing was terra nullius...or an empty land. The Mabo Decision overthrew terra nullius and said the land was settled/owned by Aborigines. That appears to make January 26 an invasion. January 1 as you point out is a logical alternative.
