American Philanthropism is a complex beast. There is an implicit understanding you can do good whilst still making money. If I look at some of the investments of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations there are complexities there with the aim to get the credit for solving things, some of the pro-American bias in choices etc, Bill's other investments in healthcare. Does that mean they arnt doing great things? No.

Ron also bought a company, using a company to do it. He didnt acquire EMC through a charitable foundation. These people are investors in a global problem, as we are, pure and simple.

Now, I have no doubt that Ron will make a major contribution to alleviating a burgeoning problem of water security. But the small holders who hold shares in Fluence today are not remotely on his radar as people he would feel any compulsion to help in the least. And perhaps, the feeling is, the more he personally controls, the more effective he can be in delivering what he sees as the way (and make more dollars in the process as well)
