    Also still researching.
[One thing I'm looking at is a mistake in the "heat resistance" graph of Toyota's press release. The red line is clearly labeled as the plot of the temperature performance of a magnet with 20% less Nd, then the blue line drawn to the y-axis is suggesting 50% less Nd. I believe the -20% is correct.]

Not going to predict short term LYC share price impact, but I think it's unlikely to be positive for Lynas since it certainly sounds like decreased demand for their number one product.

For purposes of my investment thesis, I want to see Nd-Pr in more motors, including motors for applications where lightweighting and/or downsizing are unimportant. This does not get us there, but it may be leaning in that direction.

It's important to note that this is NOT a better Nd-containing magnet. That would have been great. In fact I doubt it performs better on any metric or they would have announced that too.

It's simply an apparently-equivalent magnet with less dependence on metals with supply issues (Nd, Dy, Tb).

MOST importantly, Toyota does NOT state that this new magnet is a less expensive or more economic magnet of equivalent performance to current Nd-Pr-(Dy-Tb)-containing magnets.
They mention the use of "low-cost rare earths" (repeated that four times), but towards the end they state they will "continue researching and developing technologies with the aim of low-cost, stable production."

That said, they believe it will replace magnets in current electric power steering pumps, however, so it could be they strongly expect these magnets will be part of a cheaper equivalent motor. Electric seats, windows and power steering motors are all downsized high-torque Nd-based motors in current fleet.

Bottom Line: This new magnet represents continuing Nd demand destruction for certain current applications, but holds out the hope for continued presence in more motors.
