Skol, your silver price from 1921 is not the actual price its inflation adjusted - priced in today's dollars. The gas isn't. It's an apples to oranges comparison.
In fact your silver prices prove Andy's point. Silver has been a reasonable store of value over the last 100 years, although it's true it hasn't been a good investment.
