Russia seems indeed to have 1,800 tones of gold. However that is monetary gold or if you prefer gold as part of its currency reserves. But even then that is well far from constituting 17% of the world's monetary reserves.
Bellow is a link to an article showing the top 20 countries in terms of their gold reserves in conformity with data for 2017. And if you add all the amounts on display Russia's total of 1800 metric tones represent no more than 6%.
Add those figures to the monetary gold in possession of Brazil, Iran, Greece, Thailand, Israel, South Africa, etc, etc, and you will immediately realize that the alleged 17% are nothing but a misleading figure designed to convey the feeling that Russia under savvy Puting (the leader of a country under sanctions) really knows how important gold has become, this, of course, at the peril of all those of us that have none.
