No dyeman I'm not entirely sure, but thought that to have your solar system hooked up to a virtual power system and distribute the energy around the network through someone like Greensync you needed a smart meter.
I understand exporting power straight back into the grid through the network provider doesn't perhaps require a smart meter but to share your power between houses etc in a small or large network you needed to upgrade.
I'd be happy to learn a bit more about this though...cheers
