"I'm surprised that as a staunch unionist with a travel broadened mind, you can't get a grip on the idea of equality."
Having experienced and witnessed grotesque levels of inequality and deprivation of human rights by the Neo-Nazi Howard regime, I have a very good grasp of equal rights and I am sure Julia Gillard does too.
As for seeing 'racist undertones' in some Aussie attitudes towards Asian students, all that the Asians that Maureen I and spoke to in Asia while on holiday there (after Pauline Hanson hit world headlines with her "Ban Asians and other non whites" manifesto was the same question over and over:
"Does Australia hate Asians?"
The correct answer is millions of us DO hate Asians and other not-whites - but millions us don't and they are in the majority - but not by a great margin!
So to answer your question about 'racist undertones' in Australian policies - yes there racist attitudes in many of the previous governments programs - unless the not-white person was RICH - then Liberal attitudes could be 'softened' from harsh to almost humane!
