Why 1 Because it the cross roads of the ME
2 To control Syria's Gas/Oil reserves to supply Europe in order to screw Russia who is supplying 50% of Europe's demand.
3 Therefore weaken Russia

So we see why Russia is a big supporter. Assad is a Dictator but not sure the Muslim Brotherhood would be much fun or a new US backed Dictator.
So to answer your Question will the US give up?. Probably not.
They have their Proxies doing their bidding, Muslim Brotherhood, IS, ISIS, Al Quaeda all the "Moderate Rebels" in Obama speak.

The Military Industrial Complex gets richer by the day and MSM lulls the Sheeple.

there is another point that is missed - the new silk road. - they would want stability in that area (northern Syria) and at the moment turkey and the yanks are upsetting the balance.
