Well, we all have our own methods and ways. I personally would never sell ALL my shares on a steep rise. As soon as I have achieved a rise of 35 - 50% I sell a proportion of what I am holding in that particular stock, just enough of them to cover my initial investment. This makes my holdings free rides and daily, weekly or even monthly fluctuations don't worry me.
Over many years I have thus accumulated enough to give me a stress and worry free live. Especially from stocks which pay dividends by now, eg MCR, which I bought at 36 cents only a few years ago.
Day traders seem to never be able to accumulate (although as a diversion I have been known to take the quick 5% in a few hours on trades). They spend quick gains on all sorts of things and have to research and chase the next stock they hope will "run".
So, for each person there is a different modus vivendi. :)
