Regional Development minister Alannah MacTiernan said it was possible a group of potential iron ore miners with Chinese backing could ship their product through Oakajee, near Geraldton.
“They are not building a traditional port facility at Oakajee but are exploring the opportunities for a trans-shipment facility,” she said.
She said a different group of Iranian interests was looking at shipping iron ore through Geraldton Port.
“There is a renewed interest in particularly the magnetite product that we’ve got here,” she said.
“At this point there are two projects that we in government are actively working on — one through Geraldton Port and the other proposal is through a trans-shipment opportunity at Oakajee.”
Minister MacTiernan said she was cautiously optimistic about the possibility of an new iron ore industry for the Mid West.
“We’re a little unsure of course with Mr Trump’s most recent announcement what the flow on impact that will have on the steel industry in China,” she said.
“I understand that China only supplies two per cent of the American market but it is possible that, with this trade embargo that there will be other realignments so we have to bear that in mind.”
Minister MacTiernan was in Geraldton today to announce a new $4.5 million innovation fund to drive regional jobs.
