bungy - thanks for the link back to some great posts & pics by yourself, AUboat, theinc & others from October.
Even caught a glimpse of a certain someone's hairy legs amongst the red dirt in one pic...hahhaa go Bungy go....hahaha

Could be on the wrong track here, but IF u are saying that Railway may exceed Marandoo...then that is one motherlode of ore!! Theinc's graphic is very very nice.

Tried to check in the history books (actually, web!) as to when Marandoo was discovered....am I wrong in thinking that although the mine was opened in the '90s, the actual discovery was many years ago (circa 1952) when Lang Hancock did his historic flight over the region?? Does Marandoo qualify as a discovery of recent times-pls set me straight here.

Unfortunately, the Hamersley Iron weblinks now all direct to Rio Tinto's website, & I couldn't display any of the older links.

Your post to badgerboy describes Marandoo (folding galore~big thumbs up from mrs showman)

Hamersley's Marandoo project is aprox 60k north west
    of Camp Hill.

It looks like the Milli Milli anticline, mentioned in yesterday's announcement, possibly starts south east of Camp Hill, passes thru the Karijini National Park and continues in a north west direction beyond the Marandoo project.

Perhaps, part of the answer to your question is in the following and please take note of the formation member.

The Marandoo deposit is located some 35 km to the east of Tom Price and is owned and operated by the Rio Tinto Group company, Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd. The mine was opened in 1994 and produces martite-goethite ore ranging to martite-ochreous goethite from a pre-mining measured resource of 360 Mt @ 62.6% Fe with 0.053% P, 2.9% SiO2, 1.7% Al2O3, 0.7% Mn and 4.8% LOI. Manganese oxides, mainly pyrolusite and cryptomelane, occur sporadically through the ore and shales.

The mine produces ore that is mostly confined to the upper 25 to 28 m of the 50 m thick Mt Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, although at surface the entire member is enriched. The Mt Newman Member is usually composed of interbedded BIF with carbonate and shale. The deposit extends over a length of more than 7 km along strike, with a width of 1.6 km. The ore is composed of an upper hard band and a lower soft material that must be mined in equal quantities and blended. The orebody is found on the drag folded northern limb of the Milli Milli Anticline, associated with early folds modified by later, open north trending cross-folds. It is intensely deformed in outcrop, with folds becoming more open down dip where strata dip at 3 to 5 degrees north, and plunge gently east with no major faults or shears.

    cheers
    Marny
