There is only one gas pipeline from Karatha to Perth. Yesterday's minor mishap at the Karatha end shows just how vunerable the power generation balance is. Gas is better than coal from a greenhouse perspective, but still not good. Building more coal powerstations in the SW is the worst solution from a greenhouse perspective. The only viable option is to go nuclear.
For the Southern half of WA I would like to see nuclear power stations built at Geraldton, Yanchep, Kwinana, Bunbury, Albany, and Kalgoorlie. Note that I live in one of these towns, ie. I have no problems with living in the vicinity of a nuclear power station.
Spreading the location of nuclear power stations around reduces the risks of power outages due to transmission line failures. Also, the cost savings in transmission lines that would not be needed would be substantial.
