Satan has a free will, a choice, like you and me.
He was one of the Chiefs, aka archangels, but he wanted more.
He wanted to usurp God's throne; was kicked out of heaven with 1/3 of millions of angels (now called demons and/or evil spirits)

The hot potato topic is still a mystery to many, incl me.
Still learning about it; but its true & real.

Here are many notes. Pick one.
The Story of Lucifer- How Did He Fall and Become Satan? - Christianity
https://www.christianity.com/.../how-did-lucifer-fall-and-become-satan-11557519.htm...
Sin originated in the free will of
Lucifer in which—with full understanding of the issues involved—he chose to
rebel against the Creator. This mighty angelic being
was rightfully judged by God: “I threw you to the earth” (Ezekiel 28:18).
This doesn't mean that
Satan had no further access to heaven, for other
Scripture verses ...

Lucifer's Rebellion (Forerunner Commentary) - Bible Tools
https://www.bibletools.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/Topical.../Lucifers-Rebellion.htm
It
was Lucifer's rebellious action that saw him tossed out of heaven and renamed
Satan, Adversary: How you are fallen from heaven, O
Lucifer, son of the morning! ....
The Bible clearly shows that our spiritual well-being is dependent upon acknowledging, with our lives, our reliance upon the revealed will of God—His Word.

War in Heaven - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Heaven
Several modern
Bible-commentators view the "war in heaven" in Revelation 12:7–13 as an eschatological vision of the end of time or as a reference to spiritual warfare within the church, rather than (as in Milton's Paradise Lost) "the story of the origin of
Satan/
Lucifer as an angel who
rebelled against God in primeval times.

What about Satan and the Origin of Evil? | Answers in Genesis
https://answersingenesis.org/angels-and.../satan/what-about-satan-and-the-origin-of-ev...
Jul 29, 2010 - Some believe that
Lucifer was a heavenly or angelic name that
was taken from
Satan when he
rebelled.
The Bible doesn't explicitly state this, though
Satan is nowhere else referred to as
Lucifer but instead is called other names like the devil,
Satan, etc.
