If you think shorting should be banned(a lot of HC punters do), take a look at what happened when they banned it during the GFC. Without shorters there were simply no buyers in the market and the falls were exacerbated.

Like i said before and tbulm has sort of said too, shorts only win if they hit over valued stock. They can and do lose big time when they are wrong. Without them, stocks would simply end up in even bigger bubbles than they do now and the crashes would be bigger. They provide balance to the market.
